Our main aim is to bring attention to the growing threats faced by our fragile underwater ecosystems. At the moment the state of our environment is simply a non-issue in the politics of our country. We hope to influence the policy makers to do something about it, says Azim Musthaq, Dive Instructor from Maldivers Diving Center.

This is the first time that divers from such diverse backgrounds are uniting to act together. We hope by the end of this event, we would have built a network of proactive divers who will in the future act in a united effort for the protection of our environment, he says.

Lewis Gordon Pugh swimming across tropical paradise

Lewis Gordon PughLewis Gordon Pugh, the famous endurance swimmer, is currently attempting to swim across the entire width (160km) of the Maldives – world renowned tropical holiday destination.

The purpose of this swim is to raise awareness about the challenges faced by low-lying countries like the Maldives who have done virtually nothing to contribute to the current negative climate changes but stands to lose most due to global warming and sea-level rise.

The Maldives – an archipelago comprising about 2000 coral islands, some of which are no more than barely a meter above sea level – are the lowest lying islands in the world. Thus they are the most threatened by global warming and even the slightest rise in the sea-level.

Pugh swimming

Pugh is the first person to have completed long distance swims in all five continents and over the past 2 decades has pioneered more swims around famous landmarks across the globe than any other swimmer in history.

His current challenge to raise global warming awareness by swimming across the width of the Maldives started on February 12, 2007 and is expected to be completed in 10 days.
