Famous Fish Market in Malé

The primary food of the Maldives is fish, so you cannot miss a trip to the island’s capital, Malé, where a famous fish market is located. Here you can experience some of the most interesting and unusual fish in the world, all freshly caught that day. Take time to look around the market to see what is available and what you might want to order at dinner later.

Hukuru Miskiy (Mosque)

One of the most dramatic pieces of architecture in the Maldives is the Hukuru Miskiy Mosque. Almost entirely made from coral, this building is marked with beautiful carvings inside and out and was built back in 1656. Important to the Maldivian people, this mosque represents the devotion to Islam in the country.

Maldives National Museum

The Maldives National Museum is also an experience you don’t want to miss. Some of the highlights of the museum’s collection include:

  • A coral stone head of Lord Buddha – 11th century
  • Engraved wooden plank – Hukuru Miskiy – 13th century
  • The Feyli Kolhu weaving worn by the Sultan Ghaazee Mohammed Thakurufaanu-al-A”z”am – 16th century

A peaceful park filled with beautiful flowers and foliage surround the museum and provide an enjoyable way to begin or end your trip.

Cruise Vessel Excursions

An excursion on one of the island’s cruise vessels might be just the thing for the adventure seeker in the Maldives. You can get a chance to see the island from the water as well as fish with a qualified instructor.

While it might be easy to think the Maldives is nothing more than white sandy beaches and high class resorts, the history of the culture goes much further back. By learning about the modern day market or the history of a famous Maldivian mosque and museum, you will become more aware of just how exquisite this island nation is.
